The prolymphocyte is seen pathologically in lymph node sections or on the blood and bone marrow films of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia which is undergoing transformation towards a prolymphocytic leukaemia. In this situation the calculation of the percentage of prolymphocytes is crucial to the diagnosis.
It should be remembered that in these pathological areas an important feature is a hyperlymphocytosis, by definition greater than 4 x109/L.
